May 2011 -The Changing Face/s of Communication

I attended a seminar recently and had one of those “A-ha” moments. You know when you have heard the stuff before, but it doesn’t quite hit home till someone or something makes you go “A-ha”?! The seminar dealt with the leadership excellence that is so badly needed in South Africa and how we can all make a difference by personally leading with excellence.  Communication is of course, the key to leadership and this is when my A-ha moment came……communication has changed and is changing rapidly. Are we keeping up? My fear is that if Adult South Africans aren’t keeping up with the changing forms of communication, we will lose touch with our youth completely. We cannot lead with excellence if we aren’t communicating in their language and using their medium. Today we have choices of voice, video, text, instant messages via sms-es and emails, social networks, gaming networks, Skype, Google Voice, Twitter, blogging and Facebook. We can do just about everything on our tiny little cell phones. Phew! It’s a challenge to keep up, but it’s vital for success.

As educators and those responsible for training in workplaces, we should be embracing the changing face/s of communication. We need to continuously re-structure our training so that we are talking in the appropriate language and medium. We need to offer adults, first and foremost, the basic tools of communicating to enable them to lead with excellence. But maybe I am getting ahead of myself because I suppose that we really need to start at the very beginning…….and ensure that we, ourselves, know and understand all the different forms of communication.
So excuse me while I explore the world of twittering, and perhaps you would like to become a fan of our on Facebook?!
