READING COURSES - the gateway to success
Any successful organisation realises the value of a diverse workforce and endeavours to create a culture where employees feel appreciated for their contribution, however there are staff members who simply cannot contribute substantially because of illiteracy; reading courses will, however, help with acquiring skills to enable one to engage fully with life in the office with greater confidence and success.
Reading has always been a fundamental concept taught in adult basic education. Basic reading and writing are generally taken in the learners' mother tongue, who then proceed to English language courses because of the dominance of English in South Africa.
Reading courses ensure that the person is functionally literate; meaning that the individual can cope in his everyday environment. The primary focus of the course is teaching the individual to read and write; to pronounce words; spell correctly and to widen his vocabulary.
Students cover the following during the first level of a reading course:
Alphabet, Vowels, Following instructions, Reading directions, Basic letter writing skills, Filling in forms, Basic comprehension skills
Adult reading courses then go on to levels 2 and 3 where students cover punctuation, parts of speech which includes nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and prefixes. The emphasis on any one reading component depends on the learners' reading level and specific instructional needs. In carrying out these courses, instructors use a variety of materials and the classes are based on a predetermined set of activities that may vary depending on learners' pace and progress .
Experience has shown that the most successful reading courses are the ones which are facilitated during company time. Workplace training is done in the form of companies enrolling groups of employees for upgrading of skills or improvement of qualifications by means of formal and short courses.
Triple E Training is committed to the transfer of skills through programs such as ABET and upholds the philosophy that every person should be given the opportunity to develop his personal potential within one of the career progression paths available.
