BASIC WRITING CLASSES - a precondition to a job

Millions of South Africans cannot adequately read and write, and for the people concerned, this means marginalization, above all on the labour market, as well as a considerable loss of quality of life, but basic writing classes enables all to actively participate in society's development. There are many reasons why adults may be illiterate; the most likely reason for low levels of literacy is due to lack of education, for example if a child left school early at the end of grade 2.

Basic writing classes alters and remedies the learner's ability to write words with correct spelling and appropriate word choice. Reading and writing the alphabet, completion of simple forms and sentences, copying and writing basic word sentences from dictation; the beginner phase for basic writing classes means students will be able to use writing for basic survival needs and for communication at a beginning literacy level already. Yes, there are millions of functional illiterates - being able to master the basics of reading and writing - but according to one definition - do not meet society's minimum requirements regarding the command of written language. Reading and writing to the satisfaction of employers is a precondition for participation in written communication in all areas of work and life, because with these skills, participation in everyday life and working life becomes a glorious reality.

There are many obstacles facing those who are functionally illiterate; certainly you can hardly hope to get your driver's licence, as who is going to have the patience to fill in the forms, or a worse scenario; who will fill in your application form when you apply for a new job?!

There are many projects that aim to improve adults' basic literacy and numeric skills, and as a consequence make illiterates more employable. Top businesses and employers have revealed how their investment in basic writing classes for employees has brought about significant business and social benefits.
