BASIC READING SKILLS - from darkness to light

Reading is the most basic of skills; it provides access to other skills and knowledge, facilitates life-long learning, and opens doors to opportunity. We know that large numbers of adult learners need to improve their basic reading skills. An adult with low literacy skills cannot effectively negotiate the health care system, is an uninformed consumer and most importantly cannot obtain and keep steady employment which would give the security one craves.

Illiteracy among adults is nothing new. It has been detected in hospitals, businesses and the hospitality trade, often too late, when irreversible mistakes have been made.

However there is help for previously disadvantaged adults to attend classes specially geared towards bringing basic reading skills to adults who missed out on this basic right from the previous government. Adults who complete the first level, already will be able to recognize simple words and phrases and will be able to describe an activity or object using basic vocabulary. Learners doing basic reading skills will be able to read and understand times and dates as well as read the alphabet fluently! All this just on level 1, and already a degree of confidence will encourage learners to eagerly move on to the next level.

Imagine having such poor English skills that you can't read a newspaper, understand the directions on a bottle of pills or, in many cases, carry on a basic conversation. Millions of us hide our reading difficulties by not getting into situations in which reading is required. This often means not applying for higher paying jobs, or sometimes not applying for a job at all. Employers understand this, and enlightened companies often offer writing, reading, and math instructional programs for employees.

There are many organizations that focus on adult literacy. You can contact Triple E Training by clicking here. We offer basic reading skills that give learners the chance to gain confidence in the workplace, simply because reading of important messages and reports has been made a reality.
