NOTHING CAN SUBTRACT FROM ADULT MATH CLASSES

Adult math classes present both exciting opportunities as well as enormous challenges as it has the potential to provide adults, who previously did not continue with mathematics beyond grade 9, with access to the kind of skills that are crucial in order for them to participate meaningfully in the modern world. Mathematics enables creative and logical reasoning about problems in the physical world as well as in the context of the subject itself and math classes will help many of us to make use of that understanding in our daily lives.

It also provides access to further study in various fields such as engineering, for this reason it is important that adult math classes are of a high quality, as these classes are crucial for adults who find themselves in these careers as they are able to effectively use these skills as required in their work in a manufacturing or technical capacity in the organization.

At the end of the course, learners will be competent with the four basic operations, namely addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  These form the bedrock of all mathematics learning.  More advanced adult math classes will show learners how to -

  • work with calculators,
  • know the properties of geometric shapes; natural forms and representations of shape,
  • be able to estimate and determine the perimeter, surface area and volume of  objects.

Workers across all occupations in a broad range of jobs use some kind of basic math, so where recognition of previous learning is required the learner will need to prove competence in Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 from adult math classes.

Ordinary problems are mathematised in the workplace, like when a payslip doesn't reflect the right amount, basic maths acquired from adult math classes can then be applied in this reality situation.
