Adult training issues clarified

Findings of the 2008 IEB Adult Education Conference have shed light on the state of adult training in South Africa. Some of the findings of the conference are shared below.

• More men than women are enrolled in adult training programs.
• Learners in the age group of 36 and above are well presented at these programs.
• Most learners study part-time.

Everyone has a right to basic education and as such companies can do more to expedite the process of getting South African workers the education they need to become more productive contributors to the workplace and the economy. From the above findings it is clear that more women should be enrolled in the programs and that young adults should also be targeted. Where possible companies should allow for study time to ensure that the workers can reach the desired level of education sooner rather than later.

There are reasons why not enough companies have taken the opportunities available for adult training to further the education of their employees including:

• Many employers don’t yet understand what ABET is and how they will benefit from it.
• Business owners don’t yet understand how ABET adds value to their day to day business operations.
