Why ABET training is so important in South Africa

With more than 3 million South Africans not being literate at all, the National Education Strategy was introduced to tackle the problem. As part of this strategy ABET training programs have been developed. The outcomes based ABET training has the purpose of ensuring that adults in the country attain basic literacy up to the level of Grade 9.

ABET training programs ensure that upon completion of the four levels that adults also have their basic education qualification and have the learning tools and skills to apply their knowledge. The adults receive nationally recognized certification for each of the four levels.

The skills development on this level entails the following areas:

  • Humanities sciences
  • Life orientation
  • Tourism and hospitality
  • SMMEs
  • Arts and culture
  • Economics and management science
  • Mathematics
  • Technology
  • Language and communication
  • Ancillary health care
  • Natural science
  • Agricultural science.

Overseeing of the education standards

The above areas and skills development in the mentioned areas are presented according to standards and guidelines as overseen by the National Adult Basic Education & Training Board.

Why this type of skills development?

Employers will recognize that illiteracy hampers an employee’s ability to handle some of the basic tasks such as following instructions on a map or understanding simple mathematical formulas. From construction to health care industries benefit if the employees are literate and have an understanding of the world around them. Since it is most difficult to function in today’s society without the basic skills required to open a bank account, handle a monthly budget, ensuring a reasonable level of hygiene and health or even understanding the basics of environmental care, the ABET training as provided by companies such as Triple e has become essential for South Africans. Contact us today to book one of the courses for your employees and empower them to function in modern day society.
