Functional illiteracy is the main barrier of entry to skills development, and prohibits workers from developing production skills and advancing in the workplace. Staff training means that employers can offer learnerships to their own employees or can recruit unemployed people for training. A learnership is a training programme that combines theory with relevant practice on-the-job. This type of staff training give learners the chance to learn the ins and outs of an occupation by practising all its aspects under the guidance of an experienced and qualified person.
Staff training is a positive investment in the future, because up-skilling of employees equips learners with the necessary communications, numeracy and life skills to be competent in the work place, participate in their communities and improve the quality of their lives.
Training for staff is ideally suited to employees who have had no formal primary or secondary education, but also serves to improve the skills of those who have been out of the educational environment for some time and need to brush up on their skills before progressing to a learnership or Further Education and Training (FET) courses. Critical skills refers to particular capabilities needed within an occupation, for example, general management skills, teamwork skills, communication and technology skills.
