ABET
TEACHING BASIC WRITING SKILLS
to those to whom the pen is a useless tool
What may be our nation's most insidious social problem, and the root cause of many problems are adults who cannot read or write - who hide behind a wall of fear and embarrassment, and for those of us who take literacy for granted, its impossible to imagine a world where the written word is a blur - teaching basic writing skills means that the lives of previously disadvantaged people can change completely .... for the better!
With the South African economy reeling under a serious shortage of skilled manpower, the Human Sciences Research Council estimates that half of all economically active Black adults are illiterate, and the ramifications are alarming.
Any good news?
The good news is that today South Africa runs ambitious adult education programs, teaching basic writing skills with literacy courses geared specifically towards helping adults achieve school level qualifications and beyond, as well as programs aimed at making the business community more aware of the problems of illiteracy, and to tap their resources in solving them; the companies involved pool finances and skills to raise the level of literacy among employees.
Company's who have specially trained teachers teaching basic writing skills aim not only to educate employees, but to form close links between the business and the community, and because its an area where so much can be achieved, every single company ought to consider it.
In a society increasingly dependent on technology and information, illiterate people struggle to survive, but by teaching basic writing skills, previously disadvantaged adults will no longer find themselves excluded from meaningful work, influence and power.
At Triple e we have delivered ABET to more than 600 companies throughout South Africa, helping them to ensure that their employees shoot from nursery school literacy level to well beyond functional literacy.
