"Your life is a mess because you don't know how to manage your money," - these words should be enough incentive for anyone to be desperate to learn basic math, and teaching basic math enables the learner to calculate distance, size, shape, space, or collections of things in order to be able to function independently in the workplace.

The South African education system is in a partial crisis as a result of a deficient national education system implemented under its previous system of government.

In real life, math is nearly always hands-on: we count the money, double the recipe or measure the wood. With teaching basic math, a standards-based approach to teaching adult basic math fits well with good adult education practice. The approach is learner-centered, involves a solid theory of learning for understanding, and addresses the wide diversity of cultural background, learning styles, and abilities of the learners.

Teaching basic math means -

• Learning mathematics empowers adult learners;

In terms of teaching basic math, the math must be meaningful and connected to adults as they go about their daily lives. Making use of a range of visual models helps learners conceptualize fractions, decimals, and percents ..... for instance, folded paper can represent fractions and can demonstrate halves, quarters, eighths. Pie graphs of a day's activities can be drawn with coloured pencils - learners describe the pie graphs in fractions as well as in percentages..... decimals and percentages can be taught at the same time, so that the students can relate these two concepts. One of the main aims of Triple e is to ensure that every adult participant leaves a basic math course with lasting impressions and skills that will connect learners more closely to their workplace and their environment
