TEACHING BASIC LITERACY
tools for survival
Being able to read and write only is not enough for South Africans to be able to be players in the global economy; literacy means that people must be able to read and understand complex issues; in other words South Africa needs citizens that are well informed, skilled and able to participate in debates, and the way to achieve this is through teaching basic literacy, so in an attempt to eradicate illiteracy, Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) has been instituted to provide illiterate adults with basic literacy, enabling them to participate effectively in socio-economic and political processes to contribute to development and social transformation.
It is estimated that millions of South Africans are still functionally illiterate, despite the government making the eradication of illiteracy a priority since 1994. Teaching basic literacy empowers people with a network of information that all readers need to possess; it enables them to take up a newspaper and read it with an adequate level of comprehension, getting the point, grasping the implications and relating what they read, which alone gives meaning to what they read ...
Teaching basic literacy encompasses reading, writing and math -
- Reading: Fluency is the ability to read with efficiency and ease, while comprehension is understanding and making print useful.
- Writing: Effective writing instruction is an essential skill for all students enrolled in adult basic education programs. The ability to write well is vital in today’s world; a survival skill for job seeking, job performance, and job advancement. Above all, writing is thinking; developing writing skills means developing thinking skills.
- Maths: Estimation and mental math are crucial skills
Beyond its tragic personal cost, the social and economic burden of illiteracy is staggering; teaching basic literacy is Triple e's speciality; we are one of the top 5 Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET), learnership and FET providers in South Africa, and with this is mind, there is no excuse for illiteracy.
