CLASSES FOR ADULT EDUCATION
opening the doors for learning

Many people see adult education as having a helping role in the transformation of South African society; and classes for adult education is a realised dream in a land where so many have no education at all, and this is thanks to companies and networks that form the basis for such a learning society and serve a huge portion of the South African population which did not benefit from schooling in the apartheid era.

A couple of compelling factors which have influenced the need for classes for adult education in South Africa:

- the disaster in the school system and its failure to provide adequate initial education;

- rapid technological change in society and the need for training and retraining, together with the growing awareness of the relationship between levels of training, productivity and economic growth

- an increase in productivity through the training of individuals in the workplace; for instance, workers in a hospital know how to measure medicines because of understanding basic numeracy

- the enhancement of personal growth

Classes for adult education is recognized as encompassing the whole field of educational provision outside of the conventional formal system of initial education.

It is important that people have access to higher education and thus it is vital that previously disadvantaged people are afforded the opportunities, and employers are called upon to observe this basic right to allow employees the opportunity to write examinations for courses they have worked so hard toward. Promoting ABET among employees will not only be beneficial for the learner themselves but also to their families and employers. Triple e delivers classes for adult education in all nine provinces and our projects are aimed at small to medium sized companies - mobilizing pressure on them to fulfill their promises to provide skills education for all disadvantaged and deprived sections of society.
