BASIC READING
a prerequisite for development

The prime driving force behind basic reading is to combat ignorance and to develop and retain the capacity to form our own judgments and opinions. For a future South Africa that has a dynamic economy, we need citizens who are well informed and understand basic reading, and in an attempt to eradicate illiteracy, the Department of Education has instituted Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET), which aims to provide illiterate adults with basic education and training to enable them to participate more effectively in their workplace and communities. Seen as a prerequisite for development and continuous intellectual growth, basic reading - the opportunity to read - should be open for everyone. Reading is an essential and basic competence for living and taking control of one's life in this day and age, and it becomes a lifelong habit that enables us to continue learning long after we have left our formal education behind. Items on entrepreneurship, job hunting and the job market are articles that could be overlooked due to illiteracy. ABET levels 1 and 2 books are available for learners, drawing from real life issues in urban and rural settings.

Basic reading can make the difference for a young person passing or failing at a tertiary institution, or between winning and losing on the highly competitive job market.

The two purposes of basic reading are:

- Reading for literary experience.

- Reading to acquire and use information, for example, information on faxed messages, computers, memorandums etc. - Imagine missing the opportunity of a better paid job because you couldn't read.

ABET serves as a stepping stone which enables learners to ultimately access qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and Triple e, one of the most successful, sought-after Adult Basic Education and Training Centres, provides basic reading courses acquired from ABET which have the ability to transform learners' sense of themselves, build their confidence, as well as play a pivotal role in improving productivity levels within the workplace.
