We are in danger of handing too much out to our learners in South Africa and thereby not passing on skills at all, but rather an attitude of entitlement. This will have dire consequences for us as a nation. We have all heard and even used the saying “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” The message we should be taking from Prof Jansen today is that we should all re-look at the way we are training and ensure we are promoting life-long learning and not the notion that we are owed everything.

Fortunately there are groups of adult learners who indeed grab every opportunity gratefully and advance themselves, and certainly do appreciate the privilege of training and education. We are so proud of these learners from Life Health Care Randfontein who have recently received their Certificates of Competence for Communication and Numeracy. The ceremony was held their Randfontein offices and we are extremely proud that they have progressed so well since 2009. Thank you to the management of Life Health Care, to the Triple E Training facilitator and the hard-working learners. You have shown that above all your other responsibilities, you make your own time to develop yourselves.
