Increased safety and security effectiveness

The Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASETA) would like to decrease the amount of illiterate employees in the industry by offering them an opportunity to receive Adult Basic Education and Training. SASETA provides funding for employees and employers who are interested in rolling out this education programme in their companies. This funding applies to individuals and employers who are registered with the SETA and are paying levies towards the improvement of skills and development within the industry. A list of preferred ABET facilitators and providers can be supplied by MERSETA. The ABET programme has been rolled out nationwide and a facilitator who meets your requirements will be available in your area.

Many South Africans lack the skills to enable them to improve their level of education. The Mining Qualifications Authority and MERSETA endeavour to change the lives of these people by providing them with basic education that will give them skills to allow them access to further education and self development. Employers within the industry can register with MERSETA and apply for funding to assist in this education. The Adult Basic Education and Training programme is the preferred means of providing basic education to illiterate or under educated individuals. Employees will be assessed to find out their current level of skills and training and skills development will begin at the appropriate level.

Part of the plan for educating adult illiterate South Africans is to provide them with life skills training. Life skills enable a person to function optimally in society and have access to benefits form integral institutions that can improve a persons’ lifestyle. This includes teaching people about things like banking and medical aid as well as insurance training. Understanding the terms as well as how these institutions operate will allow these citizens to access these institutions and receive the benefits associated with them. Adult Basic Education and Training programmes provide these life skills training as well as basic education. The programme also addresses health and safety issues for and individuals and aims to provide a better style of living to illiterate and uneducated South Africans.

The food manufacturing industry has unique health and safety issues that must be strictly adhered to at all times. Employees in this industry must therefore have a basic education as well as training regarding hygiene and other factors that are inherent to the safe manufacture of foods. Yet many employees in this industry are uneducated and even illiterate. The Sector Education and Training Authority provides registered employers with funding as well as access to the Adult Basic Education and Training programme for these under-skilled employees. The programme teaches learners basic reading and writing skills as well as maths that can be implemented in the workplace.

 

Financial and Accounting training to improve skills levels

Due to the nature of the financial and accounting sector, less than 3% of the workforce does not have basic education. It is however important to improve this figure and provide basic education and training to these employees. FASSET, the Sector Education and Training Authority for the financial and accounting sector, encourages employers to implement the Adult Basic Education and Training programme to facilitate this learning process. They provide funding as well as accredited preferred ABET facilitators that are trained to take into account the unique factors within this industry. The project has been rolled out around the country and offers this incentive to employees and employers who have registered with FASSET.

The Department of Education is Addressing SA’s Needs

There are over 3.3 million South African adults who are unable to read or write. With the role out of the Adult Basic Education and Training programme throughout the country, the Department of Education has put its’ backing behind learning centres that are being housed in community centres. It also launched the South African National Literacy Initiative which is based on volunteers offering their services in the training centres so that more of the illiterate population can be reached. The various training centres and volunteers acting as facilitators in the centres must be registered with the Department of Education before they can begin offering services to a community.
