The services industry in South Africa is always criticised for the low level of service that they offer. It is imperative that employees in this sector receive training and development to improve these service levels to meet with international standards. The Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) programme is aimed at providing basic as well as value added skills to employees in the services industry. The Services SETA provides funding to employers to incentivise them to offer skills training to their employees through the ABET process. An ABET facilitator can be registered with the SETA or an external facilitator can be used as long as the accredited with UMALUSI or ETQA.

The wholesale and retail sector SETA has been set to identify the major role players within the industry and provide their employees with adult basic education and training in accordance with the South African Constitution which provides that every person has the right to an education. The country will benefit enormously from a workforce that is skilled through the interaction between government, stakeholders, service providers and employees in the industry. The effect will be better communication and understanding of the sector by all the parties involved but will benefit the learners and future generations of workers the most by a continual imparting of the skills that will be gained through retail sector education.

The Sector for Education and Training Authority came into being in 2000 as a brainchild of Government and Industry to develop the education and skills levels of South African employees to be on the same standard as the rest of the world. By establishing as Sector for Education and Training Authority for every industry sector there could be more control over the quality and initiatives for training which would be applicable to the specific sectors. There is a Sector for Education and Training Authority for every sector to oversee that the materials and training are on standard ensuring that a qualification gained in one province could be recognized in all the provinces of South Africa.

Although people don’t realize it the difference in wording does reflect on a difference. SETA approved indicated that the SETAs across the country approve of the specific training and provider and that the materials used are approved. A SETA approved trainer company thus will provide training on the required level. A company can thus give a certificate that is SETA approved. SETA accredited means that a trainer provider is approved and has gained full accreditation with SETA. Once accreditation is received the company becomes more than simply a SETA approved trainer and will thus have more status in the education and training industry. The course provider has also qualified to provide the course according to a specific Seta’s standards.

EDTP ensures quality education in South Africa. Genuine educational equity requires that students in primary and high schools study with teachers who educate by example as well as direct instruction; students long for teachers who look and sound like them, who understand their cultural norms, and can lead them to higher education and into the corridors of power. Ideally, ethnic, linguistic, and socio-cultural diversity in the educational community would mirror the nations.,but achievement of that ideal depends upon assuring disadvantaged youth and adults access to teaching positions through non-traditional career paths.
In South Africa, teaching certification requires a Bachelor’s Degree and a year of pre-service training beyond college graduation, but the Education, Training, and Development Practices sector employs para-professionals, early childhood educators, industrial training specialists, and other professionals who conduct the serious business of education outside traditional schoolrooms. ETDP SETA assures these workers meaningful training and access to diverse routes for professional advancement.

South Africa controls the majority of the world’s mineral wealth—90% of its platinum, 80% of its manganese, and half of its gold. The nation’s legendary diamond mines rank fourth among the world’s producers. Mining has always driven the South African economy and mineral exports are crucial to the country’s sustained economic growth. More than 450 000 people mine South Africa ’s minerals and nearly half-a-million more workers provide goods and services for the mining industry. The MQA is a SETA that works specifically to administer as well as assess ABET programs for miners and workers in mining’s allied industries. MQA boasts one of the highest retention and graduation rates among the nation’s SETAs. Developing English-language and mathematics skills, miners have emerged from Earth’s dark caverns to take places among the industry’s leaders because of standards administered in education in the mining industry by MQA.
