Although it is imperative to provide a means of educating illiterate people in South Africa, it is also important to improve reading skills. A higher level of reading and understanding literacy materials is necessary for individuals to access further development and higher learning facilities. Further education and training facilities will not accept learners or students who only have basic reading and writing skills as they will not able to follow the course material. Learning at a higher level requires a student to be able to absorb knowledge on their own as well as interpret the subject matter with only the assistance of a lecturer.

Government, in conjunction with the department of education, SETA’s and other educational institutions is continually rolling out projects and programmes to improve the high rate of illiteracy on South Africa. The projects are mainly aimed at the adult population group who do not have the most basic reading skills. This is largely due to the legacy of apartheid and the lack of education that was provided to most people in the country but the lack of schools in rural communities also plays a part. This is a huge problem to tackle and it is the responsibility of each and every literate citizen to do their bit in advancing reading skills in South Africa.

South Africa has one of the best human rights constitutions in the world. One of the statutes is that each and every South African has the right to receive an education. There are however many rural communities and sections of the population group who do not have access to a school or other education facility. This makes it necessary for children who want to learn to read to travel great distances to reach a school. Boarding schools are expensive and way out of the financial reach of most families. It is important that every South African becomes involved in ensuring the future of our country and help with the education of our children.

Can you imagine going through life not being able to read at all. Being able to read books helps you access your imagination and dream. Your imagination can help you envision a future that may otherwise have been impossible. Having dreams of a better future can help you set goals and find ways in which you can achieve your dreams. And of course being able to read gives you the access to the knowledge and skills that will lead you on the right path. Give someone the gift of adult reading classes and watch them begin to dream and achieve a higher level of success in their lives.

It is taken for granted in society that most people are able to read and write. The truth is that millions of South Africans do not have even basic reading or writing skills. There are also a great number of people who need to develop reading skills as well as writing. Functioning in today’s world necessitates the need to be able to read and write. Applying for the most basic services requires completing of documents that not only need to be read but completed. People that do not have these skills need to trust and rely on others who may not have their best interests at heart.

It is next to impossible to function in any area of modern society without reading skills. There are however many people who do not possess these skills and must struggle to earn money, support their families and just try to get by in life. In fact, access to education is now defined as a basic human right and is enshrined in the South African Constitution. However, most of the people who are illiterate in South Africa are adults who were not allowed to receive an education under the previous government. It is up to the people who have had the benefit of an education to assist in whatever means possible to ensure everybody has reading skills in this country.

Just imagine for a moment not being able to read. Our entire society is based on the premise that each and every person will receive an education and will be able to read and write. We live in a fast paced technological world where there is little to no place for a person who is uneducated. The problem that we are faced with is that most illiterate people are adults who are too old to attend school and these people probably earn at best a minimum wage, which means they do not have the means to educate themselves. There are many ways in which you can help to alleviate this problem, such as financing a person in need of basic education or becoming an Adult Basic Education and Training facilitator. Find out how you can help today and help fight illiteracy in South Africa.

If you cannot read or write your ambitions simply cannot be realised. In a world that is changing to one where information is the currency that will allow people to reach their true potential. Someone who is illiterate is denied access to the information available in today’s knowledge rich environment and has to allow others to translate this information into something that they can understand. By being disenfranchised in this manner the illiterate worker is forever at a disadvantage. ABET is changing that status and is also changing people’s lives across South Africa. Business and government have shown themselves to be committed to this goal through rolling out ABET programs across South Africa.

An education is something that no one can ever take away from you. Once you have learned the rudiments of reading and writing the world is your oyster, with the basics you can read further, improving your education. You can achieve almost anything you desire once you have the mental tools at your disposal. Unfortunately for the estimated 3.3 million illiterate people in South Africa they simply do not have these tools. However this is changing due to the fact that Adult basic education and Training programs are being rolled out across the country and are today benefiting 100’s of thousands of people.

Adult Basic Education and Training is changing the face of South African society by replacing ignorance with knowledge. This is important not only because of its ramifications for business but also in its knock on effects for the wider society. An educated populace is much more likely to actively engage in nation building and much less likely to engage in activities that are detrimental to the nation as a whole, such as criminal activity. By bringing a basic knowledge of reading, writing and arithmetic to the previously disadvantaged ABET programs are changing South Africa into a better, more socially conscious country.
