Custom materials development are one of the key focus areas of the Adult Basic Education and Training programme rolled out by government to address the issue of the high illiteracy rate amongst adults in South Africa. The materials have been created to provide education in all 11 official languages and with the assistance of linguists and practitioners take into account the cultural differences inherent in different population groups. The materials also take into consideration the unique requirements of learners, teachers as well as the industry sector in which the education and training is being aimed at. The ABET materials are mainly available in print although some materials are available in other mediums.

We understand the companies and learners want to keep their learning experiences within their budget range. It is for this reason that we take every possible step to ensure quality education at an affordable price. The ABET course costs vary according to location, number of attendees, levels taken and materials required. In general the ABET course costs for every level are around R1400-R1800 per learner. The ABET course costs already include the lecturing, hands-on practical experiences, and learning materials. The general timeframe for the completion of one level is about 6-10 months depending on the learner’s pace and circumstances. There are however, variables that influence the ABET course costs and as such the above are just basic guidelines. We recommend that you contact us for a quote that reflects your particular interests, location, materials, etc.

Umalusi is an example of an ABET training quality assuror. The purpose of an ABET training quality assuror is to oversee the training provided by companies and institutions. The ABET training quality assuror will set standards for adult education and how the courses should be presented. This protects learners against fly by night companies and ensures that all the learners receive quality education that can be applied in the workplace and modern day society. By setting standards for materials used, locations, experience, qualifications of presenters, and the course content, the ABET training quality assuror ensures a high level of quality that can be expected from ABET accredited training providers such as Triple e.

The Sector for Education and Training Authority came into being in 2000 as a brainchild of Government and Industry to develop the education and skills levels of South African employees to be on the same standard as the rest of the world. By establishing as Sector for Education and Training Authority for every industry sector there could be more control over the quality and initiatives for training which would be applicable to the specific sectors. There is a Sector for Education and Training Authority for every sector to oversee that the materials and training are on standard ensuring that a qualification gained in one province could be recognized in all the provinces of South Africa.

Although people don’t realize it the difference in wording does reflect on a difference. SETA approved indicated that the SETAs across the country approve of the specific training and provider and that the materials used are approved. A SETA approved trainer company thus will provide training on the required level. A company can thus give a certificate that is SETA approved. SETA accredited means that a trainer provider is approved and has gained full accreditation with SETA. Once accreditation is received the company becomes more than simply a SETA approved trainer and will thus have more status in the education and training industry. The course provider has also qualified to provide the course according to a specific Seta’s standards.

Custom Materials Development plays a vital role in catering to the learning needs of course attendees. As part of custom materials development for the various ABET programs language courses in all eleven official languages are available. Although most of the course material is written in English because publishers fear tremendous financial losses if the courses were to be published in African languages, skills development in English ensures that learners can understand the course material. Custom Materials Development policies are in place to ensure workbooks, writing materials and papers in print to ensure that the majority of learners can have access to the education. There is however also some course material in digital format.
