Basic numeracy begins with teaching a person what a number depicts and how to count. Once a person knows the name of a number and is able to place them in the correct numerical order, they can begin to learn how to recognise numbers. After this, an individual can begin making basic sums such as addition and subtraction. A learner must be able to write the numbers to enable him or her to make these calculations on paper. So before a person can begin learning basic numeracy it is imperative that they are able to read and write and apply these skills to the world of numeracy.

A basic writing course will not give you the skills to become a writer overnight. It is aimed at people who have little to no literacy skills to enable them to learn to read and write. A basic writing course will teach an individual everything about writing from holding a pen correctly to forming the letters in the right way. It will also give a learner basic grammar skills and teach them the correct spelling of words. The correct format of documents such as writing a letter in the correct way is another benefit of taking a basic writing course.

The Triple e literacy education programs are presented on all ABET levels and upon completion of every level, the learner obtains the necessary nationally recognized qualification. Literacy education programs are focussed on first teaching the learners the basics, and from there progressing to more advanced literacy and finally total comprehension of a language including reading, writing, understanding, and communicating effectively in that language. Comprehension, grammar, and more advanced writing are done on the appropriate levels. The learner starts at a particular level based on previous education or the absence of previous education in the specific language. By assessing the learner’s skills levels first we ensure that the learner will be able to understand the work and progress from previous knowledge to the most advanced level in the shortest possible timeframe that is appropriate for the specific learner.

Triple e provides well structured English classes for adults in the workplace. Every class is structured to meet the specific learning needs of the attendees and upon completion of the specific levels the attendees will do either an assessment or a POE. Once they have passed the level they receive their NQF for that level. Pre-assessments are made of the learning skills, comprehension of the language, and previous education before enrolling a learner in one of the English classes – ensuring targeted education that is fun, motivational and highly effective. The English classes for adults are presented at the workplace, making it possible for more workers to attend and thus become skilled in the most used business language of this country.

POE stands for Portfolio of Evidence and refers to the portfolio that a learner has to hand in for each of the outcomes mastered in the ABET training programs. Instead of writing the ABET exam the learner must complete assignments, show proof of work completed and an understanding of the outcomes. It is project based and a more complete assessment of a learner’s skills in a particular area. The benefit of the POE is that the learner doesn’t have to write an exam which is once off, but the results are based on one assessment only. Many learners struggle with exams, but have the knowledge to provide a complete POE. The disadvantage is that it entails more work from the learner. We discuss each option with the new learners in depth to help them make informed decisions regarding the way that they want to be assessed.
