Improving workforce literacy

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

If you would like to assist your work force in improving their literacy and basic mathematics skills, enquire about the Adult Basic Education and Training programme. The course does have a cost attached as the facilitator must be compensated for his or her services and the costs of the course material must be covered. There is also an examination fee that must be paid at the end of each level so that the learners can receive their certificates. All these cost may be too high for you to be able to cover the cost for your entire workforce and low income earners may not be able to contribute to the cost. In such a case you can apply to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to assist you in giving your staff the gift of an education.

Personnel training through ABET learnership programs empower employees

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Practical illiteracy hampers a worker’s ability to perform optimally on the job and to progress in his or her career. The contribution of an illiterate worker to the workplace will always be limited in a sense to routine tasks and to physical labour. Employers that provide personnel training through ABET learnership programs empower their employees to become more productive, positive towards their work and future and also help them gain a higher level of confidence. A worker that is confident that he or she can do the work will perform better and will not shy away from new challenges. The ABET learnership programs help employees to gain the required level of confidence and thus perform better. Workers that perform better will ensure higher profits for the company and helping the company to grow.

South Africans Must Learn to Read

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Even as South Africa has become more sensitive to the value of cultural diversity, the importance of English language literacy has increased. More than ever, experts emphasize in order to participate in South African culture and commerce, people must learn to read.

As in all post modern industrialized nations, television has become the primary tool for South African acculturation. As producers make television more closely resemble our computer screens, more text accompanies the sound and images. Viewers must learn to read in order to enjoy all of television’s benefits. Trends in cell phone use also indicate how South Africans must learn to read: people now more frequently use text messages than voicemail.

Educational advancement always has been the nation’s primary tool for upward social mobility. As jobs become more sophisticated, an applicant’s command of English frequently determines whether or not he or she gets a job.
