Adult training class presentation

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

One major difference between the adult training class and that of teaching on school level is the presentation style. Adults require a lot of visual stimulation, loads of interaction, and must have specific outcomes to stay motivated. They have less time and as such an accelerated means of learning must be used. The adult training class must thus be focussed on direct application of knowledge and skills obtained. The adult training class is thus focussed on development of skills that can be used in the workplace and thus benefit the worker directly. The learner easily loses interest and it is difficult to motivate a tired or overworked worker. As such worker must not be overloaded with information, but rather receive very specific instruction to ensure quick application of knowledge gained.

Basic differences between child and adult learning

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

There are a few differences between child and adult learning that necessitate the usage of a different approach when teaching adults as opposed to children. Studies have shown that adults often lack self-esteem when it comes to adult learning. People with no prior schooling suffer the most from a lack of self esteem and fear of failure. They have never been admired by peers for their educational accomplishments and the day to day frustration of for instance, not being able to sign on forms or read important notices, build up and eventually lead to feelings of failure. As such adult learning courses must be presented in such a way that learners will build confidence in their abilities and will see almost immediate results. This is what we aim for through our adult learning courses and it is also the reason why we have such a high pass rate.

Factors affecting Adult basic training and education

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Numerous factors affect adult basic training and education. One of the most prevalent factors is that of the knowledge already gained earlier in life. The more knowledge an adult has about a specific subject even through informal learning earlier in life the faster the learning as adult. As such it is essential to pre-assess the level of knowledge before commencing with an adult basic training program. This is why we screen each of the attendees and assess their present level of skills in for instance, English communication before we commence with the course. This helps us to meet the learner at his or her level and ensure that the learner doesn’t get frustrated by the course content and pace.

Adult training in South Africa – a must

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Competency levels in many of the local government structures and various public institutions are too low according to the latest reports on the competency levels of workers in South Africa. It is shocking and it costs the country in productivity, image, and income. Retrenchment is not an option as the employment figure is already far too high. The solution is to make use of adult training facilities in South Africa as offered by Triple-e and other ABET accredited providers to enhance the skills of your employees. Rather than pointing fingers every institution also public institutions should take responsibility for the skills and competency levels of their employees by enrolling them in relevant adult training courses ranging from language and literacy, to mathematics, economy, project management, and industry specific courses.

Reasons why so many companies have failed to apply adult training programs

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Many employers have not yet applied adult training programs. The reasons are two fold. Many of the companies don’t yet have an understanding of what ABET is about and why it will be beneficial to the company and its employees if they make it possible for the employees to attend adult training programs. Smaller businesses don’t know that they can receive funding for sending their employees to adult training programs. The challenge faced by government is to inform business owners on the value adding aspects of adult training ensuring that the businesses will grow even faster once the employees have acquired from basic to advanced skills through ABET and other adult training programs. If you want to know how your business will benefit through employee attendance of Triple e adult training programs, we encourage you to get in contact with us today.

Adult Basic Education

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Reading, writing and mathematics are all tools that are needed for citizenship and entry into employment and more specialized fields later in life. Of those who enter the formal sector, more and more are finding that opportunities are opening up to learn at work, and adult basic education’s SETA’s report that millions of workers participate in structured learning.

Of those who are learning at work, thousands are engaged in Adult Basic Education and Training – in other words catching up on what they missed out from the Apartheid years. Not only that, thousands are enrolled in public sector Adult Education Centres, giving previously disadvantaged people the opportunity to skills development and adult learning.

There are many benefits to adult basic education:

  • is outcomes-based;
  • has a distinct South African flavour;
  • teaches computer skills, communications, numeracy, life orientation, technology and more;
  • focuses on the holistic development of learners;
  • is flexible enough to work within any learning environment alongside a competent and
  • dedicated facilitator;
  • incorporates life skills in all the learning material; and relates to learner’s everyday lives

There is a thirst amongst illiterate workers to learn, and to build a better life. A key challenge remains to support existing and new businesses, and at Triple E, we have a responsibility to ensure that ABET training is available nationally, to employees in all sectors.

Adult basic education belongs in the workplace, it requires flexibility and a long term commitment to allow the company to meet its production targets. A literate worker will probably produce the same level of work as an illiterate worker when performing a menial job; the difference is that a literate worker is now trainable.

Should you be interested in enrolling your staff in training that will improve their productivity and skills, do not hesitate to contact us. Adult basic education is about redressing South Africa’s widespread illiteracy and ensuring that learning takes place wherever you are.
