Adult Fundamental Education Aids Economic Growth

It is all too easy, from the comfort of a promising future made possible by a secure job, to overlook the fact that more than 4 million South Africans of working age are illiterate while a similar number have less than 8 years of formal education. This situation has made the need for adult fundamental education an urgent one. Since 1994, ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training) courses have been established across South Africa and selected neighbouring states to rectify this serious deficiency in adult fundamental education.

Literacy is just one of the skills lacking among this previously disadvantaged group. Lack of basic mathematical ability or numeracy is equally prevalent, providing another vital area to be addressed by adult fundamental education providers. The urgent need for a resumption of strong economic growth following the recent, severe global recession has created a demand for greater productivity only possible with a skilled and efficient workforce. Nationwide programmes of adult fundamental education offer a promising tool to help us build it.

Many other nations operate similar programmes of adult fundamental education, having long recognised their importance. However, the approach adopted in South Africa has taken the fundamental aspects of adult education one crucial step further. To meet the demands of the new global economy, practical skills are proving more important than theoretical knowledge thus local schemes of adult fundamental education such as ABET, were founded to address the need for vocational training as well as literacy and numeracy.

For such large-scale, national programmes to operate affectively, the introduction of standards governing the operation and content of adult fundamental education courses has proved necessary. A system of accreditation and assessment ensures that organizations that undertake the task of adult fundamental education operate according to recommended standards that take into account the appropriate SETA and NQF requirements. This is particularly important where there may be a longer term desire to pursue a higher education.

If you are seeking adult fundamental education courses, contact us for more details. We offer you the reassurance of full accreditation plus a long track record of successes.

ABET or Adult Basic Education and Training has been recognized as having far reaching consequences for both the economy of South Africa and the social cohesion of the country. With basic skills in literacy and numeracy it has been proved that the levels of crime and anti social behaviour increase dramatically. The legacy of South Africa’s historically skewed educational system have led to the country having some of the highest crime statistics in the world. It is hoped that an intensive concentration on rolling out national ABET programs will change this state of affairs for the better and lead to a more stable and prosperous South Africa.

Adult basic Education and training initiatives are at the core of providing South African’s with the skills necessary to cope with modern life. As the country becomes more and more urbanized new skills are required both at home and in the business world. Basic literacy and numeracy skills are indispensable when confronted with the complications of day to day living. Without these skills simple tasks like opening a bank account or purchasing a cell phone can be next to impossible, thus dooming the illiterate to a life of manual labour at best, complete marginalisation at worse, conditions that lead to a high crime rate and social problems.

South Africa today relies less and less on unskilled labour and more on an educated workforce. Even in industries where education was traditionally a secondary concern, especially under the Apartheid government (like mining) it has been realised that a workforce that has basic levels of numeracy and literacy performs far better than one which is uneducated. A literate workforce is more motivated and contributes far more significantly to the success of the business than one which unequipped to deal with the demands of modern business. For this reason adult Basic Education and Training programs are becoming more and more popular.

Without a basic knowledge and grounding in the cornerstones of education the individual is doomed to a life of menial labour. Studies have shown that the effects of a sub standard or no education are cross generational. That is that parents who have no education will not place an emphasis on the education of their children. South Africa is experiencing this phenomenon due to the Apartheid educational system. The knock on effects include a high crime rate which hinders foreign investment and causes anxiety amongst the populace with an attendant lack of faith in all governmental institutions. ABET can change this mindset.

All members of a company should occupy some level of leadership qualities, whether you have the leadership position as CEO or director and therefore need to delegate all members of staff or whether you’re a secretary with few leadership responsibilities you still have to be able to take a stand and make things happen. Leadership training is a crucial part of any company and is applicable to all members of staff who want to be a part of the corporate puzzle. The fact is that many people weren’t placed in apposition as scholar to participate in any activities where they could position themselves into the role of a leader, and therefore many adults lack these essential skills.

Have you ever tried to learn as an adult in the way children do? If we were to learn in the same way we would lose all hope. Children have growing brains and can intake more knowledge than adults. In addition they have 12 years at school to learn a new language, master maths, life orientation and science. As adults we are busy, have less time, and certainly don’t have 12 years to complete our Grade 12 education. As such we can conclude that adults learn differently and require education that will ensure that they can learn subjects in a shorter time span and be able to apply the knowledge directly in their lives as well as workplaces. The Triple e ABET courses have been structured to accommodate the way adults learn and thus to be highly effective. Contact Triple e for adult education courses for your employees today.

In the 1970s, when South African workers first organized to demand better wages and working conditions, they also demanded training in language and mathematics skills that would secure their places in the workforce. Through the eighties and early nineties, as South Africa evolved, adult education evolved with it. Workers, businessmen, politicians, and change agents agreed on the value of education. Education, especially adult education, was then and remains now essential to the success of South Africa’s unique experiment in multi-cultural democracy.
The National Qualifying Framework proves the nation’s esteem for the value of education. The NQF establishes clear learning pathways; and the pathways lead not only to skills and knowledge, but also to advancement up the career ladder and upward social mobility. Skilled workers and dedicated craftsmen, the solid core of every successful democracy, always have understood the value of education in a young nation’s development.

Meaningful conversation between workers and managers benefits confidence, efficiency, productivity while promoting trust and respect. When workplace “culture” thrives on the strength of shared values and effective communication, earnings and profits dramatically increase. On the other hand, when workers feel separated from their work and their leaders, both the work and the bottom line suffer. When workers enroll in and complete adult education classes, they build literacy and numeracy skills, which allow them to “own” their work. Understanding procedures and processes, anticipating steps in completing a task, workers invest in the quality of their work. Adult education classes build workers’ command of spoken and written English so that they communicate more efficiently and effectively with their managers. Adult education classes develop workers’ math and problem solving skills so that they require less guidance.

Managers sometimes talk about “getting everyone on the same page.” Adult education classes do that—literally.
