Opening a bank account, paying for water and electricity or reading a daily newspaper are only dreams, The legacy of the Apartheid educational system has left many South African’s without basic literacy and numeracy skills. This is why Adult Basic Education and Training is so important. Reading, writing and arithmetic are the cornerstones of any education. This has been recognised for centuries. Without these basic skills no adult will ever progress from the level of basic labourer to contributing meaningfully to the fiscal wellbeing of their family and the country as a whole. In most cases the lack of basic education will doom generations to poverty. It has been established that parental lack of education usually means that no emphasis will be placed on education for children, they are required to earn an income immediately in order to make up for the lack of higher income earners in the family. This is a cycle that must be broken.

Triple e provides well structured English classes for adults in the workplace. Every class is structured to meet the specific learning needs of the attendees and upon completion of the specific levels the attendees will do either an assessment or a POE. Once they have passed the level they receive their NQF for that level. Pre-assessments are made of the learning skills, comprehension of the language, and previous education before enrolling a learner in one of the English classes – ensuring targeted education that is fun, motivational and highly effective. The English classes for adults are presented at the workplace, making it possible for more workers to attend and thus become skilled in the most used business language of this country.

One of the most prevalent adult learning problems is that of fear of failure. People fear the unknown and for many adults it will be their first encounter with formal education. Others fear the classroom setup and humiliation that may go with it because of their previous learning experiences. Others fear failure. They have failed so many times in the past and walk into the classroom with a notion that they will once again fail and disappoint their employers, themselves and family. Triple e attacks adult learning problems at the root. We help adult workers to overcome fear by providing them with a fun, relaxed, and encouraging learning environment where they don’t have to compete against anyone, progress at their own levels, and have all the support they need to succeed.

Children attend school because they must. Adults return to school because they choose to learn and grow. The difference between force and choice makes a critical difference in students’ motivation and success. Knowing education will contribute to their advancement at work and in the community, adult students dedicate full attention and strict self-discipline to their studies. Naturally, determination influences adult learning because adults continue at difficult tasks and master complicated skills in spite of frustration. Adult learning advances as students understand many paths lead to the same intellectual destinations.
Adults learning also benefit from their advanced “meta-cognitive” capacities: Standing apart from and reflecting on their own problem solving processes, adults become self-conscious about how and why they think and learn. By approaching their intellectual strengths and weaknesses, adults take command of their studies and their adult learning takes them well beyond barriers and limits they once imagined.

If the same method of instruction that is applied to teach children Mathematics at school is used, it will be more difficult for the adult to learn Maths. As such it is of vital importance that the classes for adults should be focused on skills that they require to function in society and the workplace. They need to see immediate application and results otherwise discouragement will follow. It is for this reason that the ABET courses to help adults learn Maths have been structured to bring immediate results and help the adults to gain numeracy skills which they can use in all areas of their lives. The courses are presented at the workplace or specific venues and once a level is completed the learner can qualify on national level. They thus also gain a qualification empowering them to progress in life and the workplace.

It is extremely important that any visual presentation of information for adult literacy classes be in a language understood by the learners. Radio is the least effective method to present adult literacy classes since it is based only on audio stimulation while the most important way for taking information in, that of visually lacks. It is not to say that radio doesn’t have a place, simply that it cannot form the main form of presentation of adult literacy classes. The best method for learning when adults is through interactive classes structured to address the learner in a language understood while making use of various visual aids to help the learners progress quickly. As such it is recommended that you enroll your employees in one or more of the adult literacy classes presented by Triple e and ensure that they understand what they learn and that they will be able to apply their knowledge in the workplace.
