Grammar is about learning to speak and write correctly. It begins with the pronunciation of words and then moves to where these words need to be placed in a sentence. Correct spelling is of utmost importance in getting your grammar right. It is also important to learn how to punctuate sentences correctly if you want to improve your grammer. There a variety of courses available that you, as an adult, can access to help solve any grammar problems that you may have. Another way of improving your grammar is to read books and other materials. These books do not have to be about grammar or teaching aids. Any book that has been written by a reputable author will use correct English and grammar and help you improve your grammar.

Life skills’ training involves teaching a person how to function properly in their communities as well as society at large. These skills include being able to communicate within any environment. The training teaches them how to complete documents so that they are able to open bank accounts and have access to other institutions. It shows them how to apply for employment and what they need for the application to be successful such as a CV. The courses and programmes are aimed at helping under privileged or uneducated members of society function and gain knowledge on how to improve their lives.

Basic numeracy begins with teaching a person what a number depicts and how to count. Once a person knows the name of a number and is able to place them in the correct numerical order, they can begin to learn how to recognise numbers. After this, an individual can begin making basic sums such as addition and subtraction. A learner must be able to write the numbers to enable him or her to make these calculations on paper. So before a person can begin learning basic numeracy it is imperative that they are able to read and write and apply these skills to the world of numeracy.

A person who is unable to read or write needs assistance in learning these skills. There is great lack of educators and facilitators in our country to offer assistance to people who are illiterate. These teachers need to receive training on how they can best teach and pass on their knowledge to others. The first step is to show people how to recognise the letters of the alphabet so that they can begin to read. Once they have mastered reading, they can begin to learn to write. At a young age these two skills are taught hand in hand but an adult needs to be taught literacy in a different manner.

You may not see the necessity for an adult person to learn to speak. Most of us learn to speak in the first years of our lives simply by copying our parents. However, if your parents are not using language in the correct way, you cannot learn to speak correctly. The next step to learning to speak is when we reach school age and your teachers begin correcting any errors in your speech. Many people in South Africa have not had the opportunity to go to school and therefore their speaking has never improved. An adult basic education and training programme will assist individuals who want to learn to speak correctly or learn to speak a different language.

South Africa has one of the best human rights constitutions in the world. One of the statutes is that each and every South African has the right to receive an education. There are however many rural communities and sections of the population group who do not have access to a school or other education facility. This makes it necessary for children who want to learn to read to travel great distances to reach a school. Boarding schools are expensive and way out of the financial reach of most families. It is important that every South African becomes involved in ensuring the future of our country and help with the education of our children.

You need to learn basic maths skills to perform the most basic tasks in society. Without the ability to read numbers you cannot know what items cost and whether you have the right amount of money to make a purchase. Being able to add and subtract will ensure that you always receive the right change when you are shopping. More complicated calculations such as multiplication, division and fractions will enable you to enter into credit agreements and understand how interest works. All these skills will help you have better control of your finances and prevent people from taking advantage of you.

You can use adult writing classes to learn to read or to improve on your current writing skills. Having a good vocabulary helps a person express themselves better so that they are better understood. A good vocabulary comes from reading a number of books that will give you better use of the English language. To be able to attend an adult writing class you must first be able to read. An adult writing class will also assist you in proper letter formation. This begins with holding your pen or pencil correctly so that your writing flows and is not stilted. It is no use being able to write if your hand writing is so bad that no-one can make out what you have written.
