Writing Skills
There are times when writing is the best way to communicate, and often the only way to get your message across is with good writing skills. Communicating this way is more concrete than verbal communication, with less room for error. This presents written communicators with additional challenges, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, even writing style and actual wording
Some of the most basic tips to remember with writing skills include:
- Avoid slang words
- Try not to use abbreviations
- Great care should be taken to spell the names of people and companies correctly
Millions of adults in South Africa have had limited or no access to schooling, resulting in a situation in which people are unable to write, which has had serious consequences in terms of the educational, social and economic livelihoods of the general population, and especially women, who form the largest percentage of the semi- or illiterate population. Poor skills, on the other hand, can never be undone; it can cause you to lose business to your competitor and even cost you your job. Often people with minimal writing skills try to make as if they are more skilled than they actually are! Write in a conversational tone instead of alienating your readers by being too formal and bureaucratic – trying to impress with big, unimpressive, unfamiliar words will only serve to irritate readers.
