Literacy Education Towards A Better Life
Simply being able to read does not mean that someone is literate and teachers are becoming more aware of the need for literacy educationin schools and are beginning to realize the need for literacy development; working towards creating such programs to promote literacy. The word literacy does include such things as knowing how to read, but lying beneath the surface are things such as comprehension and understanding. One can easily infer that an increase in literacy education will lead to the improvement of an individual’s life as there is a correlation between illiteracy and poverty.
Literacy and adult education will need to focus more than ever before on which kinds and what levels of literacy are required for each specific group. The central problem is the quality of the education as it relates to the individual adult learner. A greater focus on program equality is needed along the following lines:
- professional development
- learner motivation
- knowledge-based program design
- increased openess to new approaches
Literacy education has helped illiterate adults residing in rural areas or in congested cities towards improved health, community life, and increased work and occupational skills. There are millions of people in South Africa who still cannot adequately read and write, and acquiring literacy and numeracy skills goes a long way towards addressing the inequalities of the past, as adults learn not only to read and write, but to take control of their everyday lives through normal daily activities such as filling in forms and banking, because for the people concerned, being illiterate simply means marginalization on the labour market, as well as a considerable loss of quality of life whereas an adequate basic education enables them to actively participate in society's development.
For several centuries already, it has been variously claimed that literacy education is the key product of schooling and would lead to economic growth and a democratic way of life, and Triple e are major contributors to increased innovation, productivity and in the longer run, creator of jobs.
