Innumeracy means you can't count .... on the job

Mention the word innumeracy, and most people think of children in school battling with maths, but after decades in the shadows of educational policy and practice, the learning needs of millions of adults are now being addressed, and adults are now enjoying the benefits of basic literacy and numeracy in particular — which has reflected in an increase in job skills.

In South Africa, adults with innumeracy problems; whose education was cut short, can now benefit, as training has been implemented in close co-operation with the Department of Labour, the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) and SETA, who open up exiting opportunities for further education and training. It is essential for Further Education Training (FET) to be as accessible to adult learners as possibles and ABET delivers its services to all 9 provinces; theirs is an approach that embraces the capacity of learners to think for themselves and to respond to the wise guidance of teachers who value creativity and self motivated learning.

Innumeracy, in simple words, is the inability to grasp numbers, the inability to perform quick mental calculations, in fact, if you are innumerate, you can't even function properly in modern society without being taken advantage of. You can't be competent in any field, if you do not understand numbers.

With valuable basic training in numeracy, learners can at least acquire the following numeracy skills:

Numeracy Skill Levels

  • Level 1: . These skills will enable them to, at most, locate and recognize numbers in isolation or in a short text.
  • Level 2: .can deal with commonly encountered documents and forms requiring them to perform a simple numerical operation such as addition or subtraction.
  • Level 3: have numeracy skills sufficient to handle the numerical tasks normally encountered in everyday life. These skills enable them to deal with printed material requiring a simple sequence of numerical operations.

Innumeracy means a dead-end future, but Triple e opens wide the doors of opportunity by enabling learners to grasp numbers and maybe a job as well!
