English Education

Language has always been a contentious issue in education in South Africa; from the drive for mother-tongue education to the ever pressing need to be able to have English education. It has a particular significance in education, especially tertiary education, as being South Africa's international language. English Education has from the beginning been given a high priority and colleges, schools and universities encourage the teaching and use of effective English at all levels of education and talented school pupils who intend to go on to tertiary, and especially university education should be equipped by the schools with an adequate English education.

Educationally, English is a compulsory subject in all schools, and is the preferred medium of instruction and tertiary institutions. The strikes by schools against the use of Afrikaans in 1976 as a medium of instruction was the start of the change towards English being the medium of instruction. The discriminatory Bantu education policy in the apartheid era resulted in restricted access to English education and little opportunity to develop appropriate abilities in the language. Consequently, a major educational challenge has been to improve access to English amongst the African majority and ABET offers a means to illiterate learners to acquire English communication skills. There should be commitment to uplift English by all stakeholders.

Good English reading and writing skills, as well as an above-average understanding of the language, is often required by various companies in South Africa, as a good understanding of the language makes for a more efficiently run company, as communication and the understanding of messages directed at you is fundamental to being able to perform effectively.

Part time or full time classes, English education is available for all levels from adults beginning to speak English for the first time, to more advanced adults who need to brush up if they want to be considered for promotion. Basic conversation, writing and reading skills can help you achieve your goals.
