Basic Numeracy
Over the past decade or so, there has been widespread concern among educators as well as employers about levels of basic numeracy among the population as a whole, and decades of neglect for millions of people have resulted in basic numeracy skills. Most learners try, with a certain amount of fear, to understand concepts that have eluded them for most of their lives and they simply don't see and grasp the relevance of basic numeracy or link it to anything in real life because they don't have any familiar contexts on which to hook their understanding. Beyond daily living skills, numeracy is now being defined as knowledge that empowers citizens for life in their particular society; numeracy has economic, social, and political consequences for individuals.
Adults should learn numeracy in an environment that is different from the one or two difficult years experienced at inadequate schools, and because they don't have a lot of time on their hands, the time they have at their disposal has to be made to count.
Just as literacy is more than letters, numeracy is more than numbers and has been defined as the kind of math skills needed to function in everyday life; and its basic numeracy that is essential for learners; not just maths. Triple e conducts classes to encourage the development of problem-solving skills that will be useful beyond the walls of learning, as adults who are numerate have a full tool-kit of problem solving strategies they can draw from to help with the everyday events like shopping, financial transactions, interpreting information in the media and taking medications, just to name a few.
Different people need different sets of basic numeracy, which means that learners empowered with these functional skills can participate fully in civic life. In opposition to the perspective that blames innumerate people for their own difficulties, Triple e, innovative Training Consultants, teaches basic numeracy as a vehicles to changing the way society treats people who don't understand it.
