ABET Learnership: Training to gain
An ABET Learnership provides a range of qualifications that specify the key skills and knowledge required to access qualifications for further education and training. Company's must be fully compliant with all the requirements of the Skills Development Act and be properly positioned within the new learning and development dispensation which demands that they convert their knowledge into a learning platform to provide employees with skills that have a social and economical value. An ABET Learnership provides opportunities for learning for all employees in the industry's they find themselves in who do not have formal education.
What is a learnership?
It's a training programme qualification that is registered with SAQA. A person who successfully completes a learnership will have a qualification that signifies occupational competence that is recognised throughout the country. The idea is that people really learn the ins and outs of an occupation by putting into practice all its aspects under the guidance of an experienced and qualified person. In order to become qualified themselves, learners will have to be assessed against occupational standards that have been agreed in advance by industry stakeholders.
ABET Learnership provides learners who have no formal qualification with opportunities to -
- having their prior learning recognised. Learners get credit for relevant prior experience
- identify gaps in their skills knowledge
- structured learning programs to close those gaps
Every learner is assessed at the end of each module if they are still attending classes.

ABET Learnerships are based on legally binding agreements and all involved will sign legal agreements. The learner will sign to complete the course, the employer signs to provide work place training and the training-provider signs to provide theoretical training.
