January 2012 - Real Corporate Social Investment
2012 brings more discussion and movement on the Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) codes and interpretation. Training your workforce or a community close to your heart, can increase your score immensely in at least three of the BBBEE categories. If you would like to embark on a Corporate Social Investment project then the Denron Komatsu Community Project is the one you should model yours on, because it is the epitome of success.
DenRon has always been involved in the uplifting of the society in which it does most of its business and from which most of the workforce come. The Community Centre in Dieprivier was established for the purpose of enhancing skills and training and since May 2007 it has been used daily to teach AET (Adult Education and Training) classes to the unemployed of the Bitou area.
It is currently considered to be one of the most successful community centres in the country. This is owing to the low drop out rate of the students and the number of students who complete their courses and are certificated. These certificates are assessed and moderated by registered, constituent assessors and moderators belonging to the Independent Assessors and Moderators Bureau.
Some Stats about this project:
- 1374 certificates have been issued since 2007, 508 for English Communication, 690 for Maths and 177 for Computer Literacy
- A total of 545 students have been assessed at the centre with a drop out rate of less than 20%
- 18 students are now enrolled at the South Cape College for Electrical Engineering at the Mossel Bay Campus
- Another 15 will be following a course in Business Administration at the Tsiba Campus in Karatara
- The South Cape College will in future work closely with the Centre in identifying students for FET courses at their various campuses.
Adult Education and Training remains the gateway to a better life and DenRon and Komatsu are playing a huge part in realizing the dreams of many of the currently unemployed youths in the Bitou area! And if it boosts your BBBEE scorecard as well, then it’s a no brainer!
