Our Materials Development and Training Departments constantly research new ways of approaching English and Mathematics learning for adults. They renovate materials annually, taking into account up-to-the-minute learning methodologies and most recent curriculum changes. A fair amount changes yearly and we are obligated to offer our adult learners the very latest of all training. We are conscious of the need to stay in tune with technological advancements and the fact that our learners should be made aware of these. However, a few aspects of education and training for adults remain untouched since, well, yes, the beginning of education and training. And we therefore remain solid in our belief that the face-to-face methodology in GET Training is most effective for life-long learning. One supporting fact is the importance of the facilitator being able to “read” her/his group and change track and theme accordingly, in order for the learners to understand, learn and apply the skill. Adults bring more complex needs than other learners to the learning event and giving them an ordered, inflexible learning programme simply does not sustain the learning process. The vital flexible aspect requires careful adaption and monitoring by the facilitator in order that she/he fulfils the overall outcomes. Another aspect we have considered carefully is the critical cross-field outcomes that should underpin all learning experiences. When you remind yourself of these outcomes, you realise that they require regular facilitation for the most part. We are extremely pleased with our new learning guides, facilitator guides and assessment guides based on a revamped curriculum and we look forward to 2011 and beyond!
