The Times featured an interesting article entitled “Matric not Good Enough for University” this morning (Wednesday 26th January). In reality the gap between school Maths and Science specifically, and University Maths and Science, is too large. This causes immense difficulties for University learners. The Acting Deputy Director-General for Universities in the Department of Higher Education and Training, Kirti Menon, indicted that matriculants with Maths and Science passes, may need to enroll in bridging courses before being able to start University studies. Previous reports from various universities in 2010, indicated that English is challenging for many South Africans entering Universities thus the necessity of so many bridging programmes at these institutions.
