May 2010 - “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” - W. Fusselman
300 Grade 3 pupils started a Reading Programme last week in 5 Southern Johannesburg Primary Schools. Triple e Training was asked by The Readers Society of South Africa to sponsor this reading initiative at the end of 2009. After initial discussions it was agreed that Triple e would sponsor 100 children and provide materials and facilitators for the 300 children.

The Readers Society of South Africa is a non-profit organization that works towards fostering a culture of reading and writing in South Africa. The skills they wish to ignite in the learners include a love of lifelong learning, a love and appreciation for reading and imagination (as a tool to help them throughout their lives), as well as analytic and critical thinking. The Nalêdi Campaign was thus born and grew with the sponsorship of MNET, Triple e Training and wonderful donations of readers from Pan Macmillan and The Penguin Group.
The Nalêdi Campaign was launched for the first time in Southern Johannesburg through consultation with the Department of Education. When Paula Whitaker addressed the first 5 participating schools and the Department of Education on behalf of Triple E at a “Kick-off” meeting in April, she said that after 19 years’ of involvement in ABET, Triple e Training knew all too well about the hardships that adults’ experience in life because they cannot read. This campaign would hopefully prevent these 300 children from ever experiencing the hardships they see through their involvement in ABET.

The campaign hopes to encourage reading and a love of books because reading literally opens doors for people. Dr Suess who is a popular children’s novelist amongst many people sums this up brilliantly: “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

Paula stated that this is one of the most exciting campaigns that Triple e Training has ever been involved in. The pupils’ actual Grade 3 teachers attend the sessions as well to ensure longevity to the 6-week training intervention. Readers SA visited Motheo Foundation Primary School and these children feature today.
