August 2010 - Materials Development team: ISonhos - The Place of Dreams
This month we feature the face of our Materials Development team: ISonhos - The Place of Dreams or where our Dreams are Made at Triple E Training.
For their journey

We design and develop material for our learners, who govern our every thought and action. We enjoy putting together informative materials; inspiring resources – something our learners can tap into during the learning intervention and for a long time thereafter. We strive to produce materials that might be picked up by the learner’s colleagues, family members, neighbours or fellow commuters and enjoyed by these secondary learners too.
Designing learning material is an involved process. The Design and Development Unit at Triple E Training is passionate about imparting knowledge, while keeping an element of fun. Finding the balance between academic content and learner interest is a challenge. Our focus is both to continuously improve on existing material and to design new products which meet client expectations and industry demands. Each product must adhere to specific requirements laid down by the relevant stakeholders in this enduring and rewarding sector.
Before putting the actual content together, we unpack the learning outcomes. We discern between the various elements that come together in this process, including the learner’s profile and level, the client’s needs and local and international trends in pedagogy and taxonomy.
We then pose the following questions – where do we want this manual to take the learner? How will this manual impact on the learner’s next step in his/her learning pathway? We consider themes relevant to the learner and investigate how the material will speak to his/her own interests, both in and outside the workplace.
Beginning to write new learning material can be likened to having a picnic; you have everything you need to have a good day, but do not know what the weather will really be like. You may visit the usual picnic spot, but always have to pack ‘what-if’ items. You are excited in anticipation of what will happen, but silently and sometimes secretly cautious of the end result.
Once new material has been designed or existing material developed, the process of inspection follows. This can be likened to a dentist visit. You prepare mentally and physically, by ensuring you have done ‘everything you are supposed to’, and while you prefer to get positive feedback, you also want to know when something is wrong, so you can collate possible solutions.
We prefer to pilot all material, in actual classrooms, although this is not always feasible. We work within deadlines, which are often unrealistic, although one finds amazing untapped abilities in a crisis situation!
It is our daily mandate to impart knowledge, while inspiring an appreciation for lifelong learning. We, the Design and Development Unit of Triple E Training, are honoured by this privilege.
