The Importance of ABET as an ABET Agent
by Judith L. Nkgase In Mafikeng

BACK GROUND:
South Africa, after the democratic elections of 1994, took a position to redress the imbalances of the past, it was then they decided to come up with programme of action which ABET was a priority. When we talk about ABET we refer to literacy which is the ability to read and write. ABET is an acronym for Adult Basic Education and Training. The vision for ABET was to have a literate South Africa which will contribute effectively to Political, Social and economic transformation of this country through community participation at the same time, the mission was to break the back of illiteracy.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ABET TO ME
ABET has played an important role to both the adults as learners and to us as ABET practitioners .Let me first focus on adults, many of them are able to read and write, they have some levels of literacy. They at least have access to information of which is able to improve their lives, they are able to do things by their own rather than on depending on others for example, they can sign by themselves. ABET has boosted the confidence of adults, they see themselves as part of the society.

ABET has also played a vital role especially on women, at least they are able to see themselves as first classes of society, they have a say on issues affecting them unlike in the past when men were playing a dominate role in women structure, they are even able to advocate for other women. They are fully aware of their rights, they know what to do especially on issues like abuse and domestic violence. In general ABET has made adults aware of their human rights. They can effectively participate in communities ensuring that their needs are been addressed. ABET has also empowered adults with knowledge and skills. They are able to improve their businesses. Above all ABET has reduce the high level of illiteracy of which was there prior 1994.

The skills acquired from ABET are equal to any other qualification obtained at day schools, because the learners receive the certificate at the end of training and their information appears on the Learner record data base and is qualified by UMALUSI.

ABET has also played a role in us ABET practitioners. It has provided us with employment opportunities that have reduced high levels of unemployment. ABET learning makes facilitation easy by means of using outcome based methods and unit standards. The well prepared facilitator guides from Triple E leaves me without stress at the end of the session.

As a trained ABET facilitator I enjoy being with learners most of the time, assisting them to solve problems they encountered when doing their home work, without stressing to help learners who cannot follow their learner guides. Learner guides are also prepared to be user friendly as my learners do not encounter enormous problems as misunderstanding.

I personally view ABET as a tool to empower the previously disadvantaged individuals to obtain skill of writing and reading, never mind the age gaps of learners.

Facilitating ABET is very interesting business to have. ABET Learners know that whatever they are learning should help them both in the present and in the future. In most ABET classes there are two different groups of ABET learners: There are the slow learners and fast learners. It takes a dedicated ABET facilitator to effectively assist both groups.

There are other challenges that confronts me as an ABET Facilitator as well. ABET Learners seem to have a lot of other commitments and believe learning has to be done only in a class environment. As an ABET Facilitator I should always remind and convince ABET learners to do their assignments and homework outside class times. We cannot progress with out this extra work – no matter what we do. Most adult learners have got a negative attitude towards Numeracy. They believe it is only for the intelligent.

ABET Agents need perseverance, administrative skills, creative skills and an awareness of the challenges ABET learners face.

ABET Agency Owner: Mrs Feziwe Sakata

I started work as an ABET Practitioner in 1994. I am now the proud owner of an ABET Agency. I am a good listener, friendly, talkative and an observant person. My personality helps me to build good relationships with ABET learners. I also remember always that ABET learners do exactly what their ABET facilitator does and they believe that what is delivered to them is genuine and true.

Facilitating ABET made me realise that I have made a great impact on ABET learners’ lives – on changing their lives. Since I stared working with them I felt that they are not just in the classroom to learn how to read, write and problem-solve but also to build self-esteem and to prepare themselves for the outside world.

All these things have helped me to become the ABET Agent I am today.
