Dubai April 2007
In April 2007, we were contracted by a large roads construction company in the Middle East to assess the English and Numeracy levels of their workers. This exercise took us to amazing locations in Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
Many of the workers in these countries originate from India, Sri Lanka, Syria, Sudan, Pakistan and the Philippines. While the diverse education systems in these originating countries might include English as a second language, the workers knowledge and understanding is limited. It is due to this limited ability to communicate in the common business language, English, that caused a fatal accident at one of the sites. Our customer insisted we assess the numeracy abilities of workers require calculation skills to determine risk factors and hazards at the worksites.
Triple E Training assessed close to 100 workers and found that there was little difference between the profile of people in Southern Africa and the people we assessed in the Middle East. Similar challenges are faced by people learning English as a second language.
We were very proud to take our business to the next level and have identified further opportunities in the Middle East to extend our services.
