START AND MAINTAIN YOUR ABET PROJECT - Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
Part 1
This is a short series of ABET project planning sections that essentially works in an industry type ABET Project - during the next few months, we will share with you our step-by-step approach to making ABET truly work.
Step 1 : Run an Awareness Campaign
Awareness sessions are vital for all stakeholders in our company / organisation:
- management
- all departments
- shop stewards
- training committees
- the SDF etc.
Your campaigns need to centre around the following aspects:
- What is ABET?
- Why are we doing this?
- How will it be done?
- Who will be the candidates for the ABET Programme?
- Use written (pamphlets, posters, handouts etc) and also live sessions/presentations.
All stakeholders need to be involved in order for your project to be fully supported from the beginning stages. If decisions are made together, then everyone has the chance to ensure that the i.e. class schedules etc. - suits them and their departments. Everyone will also be fully aware of exactly what is happening in classes and will therefore be supporting their people every step of the way.
When it comes to the actual ABET candidates
- Do not rely on written word alone to create awareness- verbal works very well with all levels of education
- Use this opportunity to de-sensitize candidates to "the assessment"
- Do not raise expectations - in fact, you should ensure that candidates know they will not be automatically promoted when they pass the level.
- Use your provider for these sessions - the provider can answer all the ABET-related questions, and you can handle the 'in-house' questions.
Frequently Asked Questions by ABET Candidates:
- Who is going to pay?
- When will the classes run?
- What do we get for this training?
- What can we do with ABET?
- Is it compulsory?
- Will we be retrenched if our education is found to be of a low standard?
- How long will it take?
- Will we get paid to be there?
- Is the qualification recognised nationally?
- Is this just for illiterates?
Our Recommendations:
- Create awareness in a positive fashion and involve all stakeholders in the early stages of the project
- Your provider can do most of the awareness raising and motivating for you
- Do not make ABET compulsory for all - definitely not without explanations
- Keep everyone updated of new developments
- Use a training committee for decision-making
- Be careful when choosing a provider: too easy, too fast, and too cheap = something is wrong!
