NO PLAYING AROUND WITH FUTURES AT TRIPLE E TRAINING!

The Training Manager normally has to cope with ABET over and above a host of other equally important, urgent tasks in his/her job description. ABET addresses the needs of adults who have been educationally disadvantaged and need to either start learning or upgrade their current competencies. For this reason alone, the ABET Programme has to be managed excellently. The first decision here is whether the Programme can be done internally or externally.

Internally includes hiring your own facilitators, managing them, co-coordinating the Programme and the progress of the learners and liaising with the relevant SETA and assessment bodies. Externally means that the Training Manger selects a provider to administer the entire Programme.

If ABET is a part of the company's skills plan, and the employees know that there is a career path plotted for them, the Programme will succeed. There are three vital aspects of the ABET Programme that can be used as part of the Training Manager's Guide when starting and then maintaining the Programme.

Quality Management of the Programme:

  1. In general if the provider has an excellent quality management system, then the Training Manager's role becomes one of support when for example, learners do not attend, and one of continuous motivation.
  2. Quality Management includes the reporting of the provider: Training providers should be assessing continuously and recording all assessments and progress. This needs to be reported continuously and effectively as well as informatively.
  3. It also includes the quality assurance of the programme - what does the provider do to ensure that the facilitators, material and methodology actually meet the standards they should?
  4. Accreditation is vital and all Training Providers should be accredited with the relevant SETA. The accreditation stamp alone is not sufficient and the accreditation needs to be verified by the Training Manger, as well as be considered as part of all the abovementioned.

Agents of Learning / Facilitators:

  • The agent of learning should be not only be suitably qualified and experienced, but also have certain traits as an adult facilitator. These would include being a communicator, empathizer, planner, assessor, administrator and having outstanding subject expertise.

Material and Learning Aids

  • Never underestimate the importance of material in the learning process. No matter how attentive the learners and how effective the facilitators are, without relevant, interesting learning material that is outcome-based, the Programme cannot be maintained.

Whether the Training manager runs an internal ABET Programme or outsourcers it to the Provider, his/her role will be largely supportive and motivational. Adults, like all other ages of human beings, respond positively to rewards and recognition and this serves to keep the ABET Programme successful to a large extent.
